AUGUST 2026
7 DAYS, 6 NIGHTS
the heart of the world…
Still a hidden gem compared to the more popular nearby cities of Barranquilla and Cartagena, Santa Marta is a vibrant city that blends history, culture, and stunning natural beauty. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the world's highest coastal mountain range with peaks reaching over 5,700 meters (18,700 feet). These mountains are home to various indigenous tribes, including the Arhauco which we will be visiting. Access to this community is a sacred experience and often-time ends up being everyone's favorite part of the tour. We will be meeting with a council of spiritual leaders who will share with us their views of humanity and nature. All of their beliefs and traditions are rooted in protecting the ecological and spiritual balance of the Sierra Nevada, which they consider "the Heart of the World."
Our tour will encompass everything from beautiful Caribbean beaches to an adventure far up in the Sierra Nevadas. Get ready for breathtaking views, incredible cuisine, and warm Colombian hospitality.

This tour is special not only because of the incredible places we will see, but because the cost of this tour will be directly supporting the Arhauco community and the Fundación Atelopus conservation projects in the region. Ecotourism is about traveling responsibly and knowing where your dollars are being put to work. Although we are extremely proud of all of our partners we work with, this trip in particular has the ability to make the greatest impact. We will also be joined by world-renowned photographer and wildlife expert: Jaime Culebras who was recently featured on Planet Earth III.
Day 1: Arrival in Santa Marta! After our welcome lunch, we hit the beach! We will be staying at a beachfront resort for our first evening.
Day 2: We begin our journey to the El Dorado Reserve. Along the way, we will stop at Finca La Victoria for tour of a coffee plantation. After our morning coffee tour, we continue to Reserva El Dorado. This reserve is home to an abundance of species endemic to the Sierra Nevadas of Santa Marta.
Day 3: We have an early morning start today, to the summit of Cerro Kennedy to watch the sunrise. (Transport will take us to the summit, then a short walk through the rainforest to the top). The summit of Cerro Kennedy is 3100m above sea level. (about 10,000 feet)
After enjoying the sunrise, we will make our way back down to El Dorado reserve to spend the rest of the morning and have lunch. In the afternoon, we will drive an hour to the San Lorenzo research station deep in the Sierra Nevadas. This station is where Fundacion Atelopus studies endangered species in the region. They work closely with the local indigenous community and have helped them not only appreciate, but understand how vital these species are for a healthy ecosystem.
Day 4: Today we leave El Dorado and head to our next destination— the indigenous village of Katansama. We will learn about the Arhauco culture and spend the day being guided through their day-to-day life. We will also meet the amazing women behind Cafe Wirakoku, a women's only coffee project in the Arhauco community. We will learn about their project and how coffee grows in the altitude of the Sierra Nevadas. In the afternoon, we head to the coast where we will stay for the next two nights on the sand of the beautiful Colombian Caribbean.
Day 5: We will spend today enjoying the beachfront resort at our leisure. Hit the spa, lounge at the beach or pool and have a drink!
Day 6: Head back to the city of Santa Marta. On our way back, we will stop and visit some beautiful waterfalls in Quebrada Valencia and have a goodbye celebration at a local hotel. We should arrive back at our resort late afternoon to spend our last evening together in one of the most unique cities in Latin America!
Day 7: Our journey has come to an end. After breakfast, we make our way back to the airport for departure.
